How to choose a clipper and blades
Start with the job. A full or hunter clip on a thick coat needs a heavy-duty body clipper; the makers state motor power and strokes per minute, and those two figures matter more than anything else on the box. A cordless clipper costs power reserve but frees you from the cable, which helps with horses that dislike it and in yards without a socket near the wash bay. Trimmers are the second tool, not the first: they are for heads, ears, jaw lines and legs, where a big body clipper is too heavy to handle.
Blades decide the finish. The maker names the cut length, from around 1 mm for a close, fine finish to 2.4 mm and more for a medium cut that leaves some coat; check that the blade system matches your clipper. Oil the blades regularly while clipping and clean them afterwards; Lister explicitly warns against WD-40 or diesel on blades. On Mallorca many horses carry a lighter winter coat than further north, so a partial clip is often enough; after clipping, a cooler or fleece helps while the horse dries and adjusts.

Questions riders ask
Mains or cordless clipper?
Mains clippers keep full power for long full clips on thick coats. Cordless models trade some reserve for freedom from the cable; check the battery runtime the maker states and whether a second battery is included.
Which blade do I need?
Blades are sold by cut length. Around 1 mm gives a close, fine finish; about 2.4 mm is a medium cut that leaves more coat. The blade has to fit your clipper's system, so check the maker's compatibility list.
How do I look after the blades?
Oil them regularly during clipping, brush out the hair and clean them afterwards, and have them sharpened when the cut gets rough. Use clipper oil; Lister warns against WD-40 or diesel on its blades.
