Grooming
A good grooming kit does two jobs: keeps the coat healthy and gives you a daily chance to check the horse over.

How to build a grooming kit
A good grooming kit is short. A rubber curry to lift dirt and loose hair, a stiff dandy brush for legs and mud, a softer body brush for the coat, a hoof pick with a brush, a mane and tail comb, and two sponges or cloths kept apart for eyes and dock. Everything else is a nice-to-have, and most of it ends up at the bottom of the box.
On Mallorca the kit works harder in two seasons: the spring and autumn coat changes, when a shedding blade or curry saves an hour a week, and the dusty summer, when a damp cloth after the brush does more than another product. Hoof care is daily, not weekly, in a dry climate where feet chip. Buy brushes that can be washed and dried in the sun. Sweat and dust shorten the life of anything that cannot.

Questions riders ask
What is the minimum grooming kit?
Rubber curry, dandy brush, body brush, hoof pick, mane and tail comb, two sponges kept separate. That covers daily care for almost any horse. Add a shedding tool for coat change and a sweat scraper for summer, and you are done.
How do I look after brushes in a hot, dusty climate?
Wash them in mild soap when the bristles clog, rinse well and dry bristle-down in the sun. Dust and sweat build up faster here than in a northern yard, so a monthly wash is realistic. Replace brushes when the bristles splay. A worn brush moves dirt around rather than lifting it.
How often should I pick out feet?
Every day, and before and after every ride. In a dry climate feet chip and stones lodge. In the wet weeks of autumn, daily picking is how you catch the first signs of thrush. A hoof pick with a brush makes this a one-tool job.
