How to choose between an airbag and a body protector
A body protector is passive. Foam or honeycomb panels sit against the torso and spread the force of a knock across a larger area; European vests are certified to EN 13158, where Level 3 is the standard used for cross-country and racing. An airbag vest is active: a lanyard connects it to the saddle, and when the rider separates from the horse a CO₂ cartridge inflates the vest around neck, chest, back and pelvis.
Neither replaces the other, and neither replaces the helmet. The hybrids in this selection – an airbag built over an integrated Level 2 protector – exist because the passive layer keeps working after the airbag has fired and while it is being re-armed. Fit decides whether any of it works: an airbag has to sit close to the body, a protector has to be measured over the clothing you actually ride in, and cartridges are a running cost rather than a one-off.

Questions riders ask
Does an airbag replace a body protector?
No. An airbag works only once it has inflated and needs re-arming with a new cartridge afterwards; a protector works continuously, including for a second impact and while you are on the ground. The hybrid vests combine both layers for exactly that reason.
What does Level 3 mean?
It is the highest level in EN 13158, the European standard for equestrian body protectors, and the level many cross-country and racing rules name; check your organiser's current rules. Level 2 and Level 1 describe lower impact-absorption requirements.
What do the cartridges cost?
A replacement CO₂ cartridge is usually in the 20-25 EUR range, which is why several vests are sold as a bundle with two or three. A fired vest without a spare cartridge offers no airbag protection until it is re-armed.
