How to choose a riding helmet
The test standard is listed for each helmet where the retailer states it; check the label inside the hat. A current riding standard is the floor, not the differentiator. EN 1384:2023 is the new harmonised European standard and is replacing VG1 01.040 2014-12. PAS 015:2011 and ASTM F1163 are the British and American equivalents, and competition rules list which ones they accept. Check the label inside the hat, then forget about the badge and concentrate on fit.
Fit is a head-shape problem: oval heads and round heads need different shells, and no strap system corrects a shell that is the wrong shape. A helmet should sit level, grip evenly all round without pressure points, and stay put when you shake your head with the harness undone. On Mallorca ventilation is the feature you will notice every single ride. Replace any helmet after a fall, and most makers say after about five years regardless.

Which safety standard should I look for in Europe?
EN 1384:2023 is the current harmonised European standard. VG1 01.040 2014-12 hats remain widely accepted during the transition, often alongside PAS 015:2011 or ASTM F1163. The label is inside the hat. If you compete, check your federation's current list before buying.
How do I know the helmet fits?
It should sit level just above the eyebrows, feel evenly snug all round with no single pressure point, and not rock or lift when you shake your head with the chin strap undone. If it only stays put because the strap is tight, it is the wrong shape for your head.
When should a helmet be replaced?
After any fall in which the helmet hits the ground, even without visible damage, and after roughly five years of use as most manufacturers recommend. Heat and sun age the materials. A helmet that lives on a Mallorca dashboard ages faster than one kept indoors.
