How to choose riding boots
Decide what the boot is for before you look at leather. A yard boot lives in mud, water and hosepipe spray and needs a waterproof membrane and a sole that grips wet concrete. A tall schooling or competition boot needs a close fit through the calf and a heel that sits correctly in the stirrup. A paddock boot with half chaps is the honest middle ground for daily riding and the choice most riders on Mallorca actually make.
Fit is measured in three places: foot length, calf width and calf height, and tall boots are bought on all three. Leather drops a centimetre or two as it breaks in, so a new tall boot should feel slightly too high behind the knee. In the Mediterranean, breathability matters as much as waterproofing for most of the year. Save the insulated boot for the few genuinely cold weeks, or for northern winters.

Tall boots or paddock boots and chaps?
For daily riding, paddock boots with half chaps are lighter, cooler and easier to fit. Tall boots make sense for competition, for riders who school in them every day, or for the look. Many riders keep both and use the tall pair a fraction of the time.
How should a tall boot fit when new?
Snug through the calf, with the top sitting a little too high behind the knee. Leather boots drop as the ankle creases in, usually within a few weeks. A boot that fits perfectly on day one will often end up too short.
Do I need a waterproof boot on Mallorca?
For the yard, yes: winter mornings are wet and the hose runs all year. For riding, a breathable leather boot is more comfortable for most of the year. The insulated, lined boots in this selection are aimed at northern winters and the coldest island weeks.
