How to choose kit for a growing rider
Split the list in two. Breeches, jackets, jumpers and yard boots can be bought with some room: an elastic waistband, stretch fabric and sock-style or elastic leg ends tolerate a size that is slightly generous, and a jacket with a two-way zip still works in the saddle. Tall riding boots are the exception worth care, because a boot that is too long behind the knee or too wide at the calf moves the leg. Helmets and body protectors are different: they are bought for the head and torso as measured today, never to grow into. A helmet that rocks or slips does not sit as it should, and a protector that is too long lifts in the saddle.
In Europe a riding helmet is usually tested to EN 1384 or the interim specification VG1 01.040; PAS 015 is the British specification and ASTM F1163 the American standard, and competition rules name which ones they accept. Body protectors are certified to EN 13158, in three levels, Level 3 being the one many cross-country and racing rules name; check your organiser's current rules. Measure a child for a protector over the clothes they ride in. On Mallorca the season is long and warm, so breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics, vented helmets and base layers with UV protection earn their place; plan riding for the cooler hours in summer.

Questions riders ask
Can I buy a helmet a size up so it lasts longer?
No. A helmet has to sit level and firm on the head as it is now, with the harness adjusted; padding or a dial can fine-tune the fit but not make up for a shell that is too big. Replace a helmet after a significant impact, even if no damage is visible.
Which helmet standards should I look for?
In Europe, EN 1384 and VG1 01.040 are the common marks; PAS 015 (UK) and ASTM F1163 (USA) also appear on helmets sold here. For competition, check the current rules of the organising federation, which list the standards they accept.
How do I size a body protector for a child?
Measure chest, waist and back length over the clothing the child rides in, then use the maker's size chart. Seated in the saddle, the protector should not push against the saddle or the neck; as the child grows, re-check the fit each season.
