Guide

How to choose a turnout rug

Start with the horse, not the catalogue. An unclipped horse with shelter and good forage copes with far more weather than most owners expect. A clipped horse, an older horse or one that has just moved from a colder climate does not. On Mallorca the wet weeks of autumn and the damp, windy nights of winter matter more than the actual temperature, which is why waterproofing and a good neck cover usually earn their place before heavy fill.

Read the three numbers on every rug in the same order: denier for how tough the shell is, the waterproof rating for how long it stays dry, and the fill weight in grams for warmth. A 0g rain sheet and a 100 to 200g lightweight-to-medium rug cover most Mediterranean winters, 300g and up is northern-Europe territory or a clipped horse standing out in a cold snap. Fit is decided at the shoulder and the wither, not by the chest strap.

Buying knowledge

Four things that decide a rug

1

Fill

Fill is given in grams. 0 g is a rain sheet, around 100 g is lightweight, 200 to 250 g medium, 300 g and above heavy. On Mallorca most unclipped horses need 0 to 100 g on wet, windy weeks at most.

2

Waterproofing

For turnout, waterproofing matters before warmth, because a wet coat loses its insulation. Denier describes how tough the outer fabric is, not how waterproof it is.

3

Breathability

A rug that traps moisture leaves a horse damp underneath. Breathable outer fabrics and wicking linings let sweat and warmth escape on milder afternoons.

4

Fit

Check the shoulders, the withers and the length to the tail. A good fit leaves full freedom of movement at walk and when the horse lies down or rolls.

Questions

Questions riders ask

Does a horse on Mallorca need a turnout rug at all?

Many do not, at least not most of the year. Unclipped horses with shelter usually manage without until the wet, windy spells of late autumn. A rain sheet earns its keep for the wet weeks. A medium-weight rug is for clipped horses, thin-skinned types or a genuine cold snap.

What fill weight should I buy?

For the Mediterranean a 0g sheet and a 100 to 200g lightweight-to-medium rug cover almost everything. 300g and heavier rugs are designed for northern winters or for clipped horses living out in real cold. Buy for the horse you have, not for the worst night of the decade. The turnout guide has a rugging temperature table with the bands by night temperature.

How do I check the fit?

Look at the shoulder and the wither first. The rug should sit in front of the wither without pulling back over it, allow the shoulder to move without rubbing, and finish at the top of the tail. Chest straps and surcingles fine-tune. They do not fix a rug that is the wrong shape.

Buying Guide

Most Mallorca horses need less rug than you think.

Unclipped, sheltered horses often need little to none most of the year; waterproofing usually matters more here than fill weight.
