How to choose a bridle and bit
A bridle is a set of pressure points, and a good one puts them where the horse can carry them: away from the facial nerves, clear of the molars, with a headpiece shaped around the poll and ears. Anatomical designs cost more because they are cut and padded for that. The money is well spent on a horse that fusses in a conventional bridle and wasted on one that goes happily in either.
Bits are simpler than the wall of options suggests. Most horses go well in a plain, correctly sized snaffle with a mouthpiece that suits the shape of their mouth. A double-jointed lozenge is the usual first choice, a single joint or a bar the alternatives. Width is measured, not guessed, and the cheekpiece should sit with one to two wrinkles at the corner of the mouth. Change one thing at a time, and give it a week.

Questions riders ask
Is an anatomical bridle worth it?
For a horse that shakes its head, opens its mouth or resists the contact in a conventional bridle, often yes: the cut-back headpiece and shaped noseband remove pressure from the poll and facial nerves. For a horse that goes contentedly in a plain bridle, the difference is comfort at the margins.
Which bit should I start with?
A correctly sized loose-ring or eggbutt snaffle with a double-jointed mouthpiece is the usual starting point. Measure the mouth rather than guessing, check the thickness suits the horse's mouth, and let a change settle for a week before judging it.
How do I check the fit of a bridle?
Two fingers under the throatlash, one under the noseband, the browband long enough not to pull the headpiece into the ears, and the bit sitting with one to two wrinkles at the lips. Leather should be supple and the stitching sound. A bridle that is drying out in the Mallorca heat needs feeding more often than one in a damp northern tack room.
