Fly & Sun Protection
UV and biting insects are a year-round concern on Mallorca, not just a summer nuisance.

Pony, cob or full?
Fly masks are sized like headcollars (pony, cob, full), fly rugs like rugs; a mask should sit clear of the eyes and not rub at the ears.

How to choose fly and sun protection for your horse
On Mallorca the fly season runs from spring well into October, and UV is a factor for most of the year rather than a summer footnote. A fine-mesh fly rug with a belly flap and neck cover does the heaviest lifting. A fly mask with ears and nose covers the parts a rug cannot reach. Pink-skinned muzzles and white legs benefit from a UV-rated cover or a horse-safe sun block on the worst days.
Mesh weight is the choice that matters. A light, open mesh keeps the horse cooler and is enough against ordinary flies. A denser, sweet-itch style mesh keeps out midges and offers more UV shading at the cost of airflow. Fit follows the same rules as any rug: room at the shoulder, no pressure on the wither, and a neck cover that stays up when the horse grazes. Check under the rug daily for rubs and heat.

Questions riders ask
When does fly season end on Mallorca?
Later than most newcomers expect. Warm, damp October weeks keep flies and midges active well into autumn, and a light fly rug or mask often stays in use until the first proper cold spell. Watch the horse, not the calendar.
Fly rug or fly mask first?
The mask, if the horse is troubled around the eyes and ears, which is where most irritation starts. A rug comes next for horses that stamp, sweat or rub in the field. A rug with an integrated neck cover and belly flap removes the need for two separate items.
Do horses need sun protection?
Some do. Pink skin on the muzzle and around the eyes, and white legs, can burn in Mediterranean sun. A UV-rated fly mask with a nose flap, shade during the hottest hours and a horse-safe sun block on exposed pink skin are the usual measures. Ask your vet if the skin is already sore.
