Pony, cob or full – front or hind?
Boots come in pony, cob and full and often as front or hind pairs; they should close evenly without gaps and never press on the fetlock joint.

How to choose horse boots and leg protection
Boots are made to take knocks, bandages to support and warm. Brushing boots cover the inside of the cannon for a horse that interferes, tendon boots leave the front open for jumping, and overreach boots cover the heels against a hind foot. Turnout boots are a separate question: most horses on good ground do better without anything on their legs in the field.
Heat is the trade-off with every boot, and in the Mediterranean it is the main one. A leg under a closed neoprene boot in July runs noticeably warmer than the bare leg, so ventilated shells, perforated liners and taking boots off straight after work matter more here than in northern Europe. Fit is set by cannon length and circumference. A boot that spins or slips down is doing nothing useful.

Questions riders ask
Does my horse need boots for turnout?
Usually not. On reasonable ground, a horse that does not interfere is better off bare-legged in the field: boots trap heat and moisture and can rub. Turnout boots are for the horse that knocks itself, or for a specific injury on veterinary advice.
Brushing boots or tendon boots?
Brushing boots cover the inside of the leg against the opposite foot and suit flatwork, hacking and lunging. Open-front tendon boots are a jumping boot: they cover the tendon against the hind feet while leaving the front of the leg exposed so the horse feels a pole.
How hot do boots get in summer?
Warmer than most riders assume. The leg under a closed boot warms during work and stays warm afterwards, which is why ventilated designs and removing boots promptly matter in a hot climate. Hose the legs after work when you can.
