What belongs in a recovery routine
Cooling is the part with the clearest basis. Tendon core temperatures around 45 °C have been recorded in exercising horses, and hyperthermia at those levels reduces tendon cell viability – which is the actual argument for cooling legs after hard work, and for doing it long enough to matter. A 2025 study in Veterinary Surgery found compression cooling reduced tendon core temperature faster and more consistently than ice boots, so gel boots are worth using with realistic expectations about depth and duration.
Light and massage sit further along the scale. Photobiomodulation at 660 and 850 nm has a described mechanism and equine evidence for wound healing and short-term comfort; a 2023 systematic review found conflicting results and no consensus on protocols, and there is no good evidence for performance effects. Massage has small, repeatable findings on stride length and hindlimb protraction. We do not stock static magnetic products: a randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled trial found no difference in blood flow, skin temperature or pressure thresholds against a placebo rug.

Questions riders ask
How long should I cool a leg?
Manufacturer programmes for gel boots run around 20 minutes, and cold therapy is commonly continued in cycles for 48 to 72 hours after a hard effort. Longer single sessions are not proportionally better, and a leg that is swollen overnight is a call to the vet, not a longer boot.
Does red light therapy work?
The mechanism is described and equine studies support wound healing and short-term comfort. The evidence does not support performance claims, and protocols between studies differ widely. Treat it as one part of a rehabilitation plan that someone qualified has set.
Why are there no magnetic rugs here?
Because the best available equine trial – randomised, blinded and placebo-controlled – found no measurable difference against a placebo rug in blood flow, skin temperature or pressure thresholds. We would rather leave the category empty than sell the claim.
